Children
Circumcisions for children one year and older can be performed under local or general anesthesia. If done under local anesthesia, your child is given a mild anti-anxiety medicine one hour prior to the procedure in order to calm him. An anesthetic ointment is applied to the area that will receive the injectable anesthetic to eliminate discomfort associated with the needle prick. Once the injectable anesthetic ( nerve block ) has taken effect, the circumcision can be completed. The procedure usually takes 20-25 minutes
Prescription medications and aftercare instructions are given and a follow-up appointment is scheduled 1 week after the surgery.
If general anesthesia is chosen, the procedure will be performed in the hospital operating room or out-patient surgery center. A mild sedative is given before placing a breathing tube to assist with breathing
while under the effect of the anesthetic . An anesthesia specialist continuously monitors the patient while the circumcision is completed and during a recovery period that lasts until his condition is stable.
Prescription pain relievers and aftercare instructions are given in addition to a 1 week follow-up appointment. Healing time is approximately 3 weeks.
