After Care Instructions

BATHING

-Bandages will be applied to protect the wound and control swelling before leaving the procedure room. Sponge bathing is recommended to avoid wetting the bandage. It can be removed on the 3rd day. Sitting in a warm bath will loosen the crusted dressings and facilitate their removal. Soak your penis for 30 minutes, the pat dry. Applying new bandages will not be necessary since healing is promoted by drying and scaling.

- It is normal for the penis to be mildly swollen and bruised up to10 days after surgery

-The head of the penis is often raw when the foreskin is pulled back for the circumcision. A yellow-whitish film may develop in the first few days after surgery. This goes away within one week. This is not pus or a sign of infection.

- It is not unusual to see a small amount of crusted blood from the incision while healing

- Itching is a normal part of healing.

-Dissolvable stitches placed at the time of surgery should be removed by your doctor if still present after 2 weeks.

It is very important to keep your follow-up appointment for your doctor to assess adequate healing.

PAIN CONTROL

You will not need more than 1-2 doses of the prescribed narcotic pain reliever.  Narcotics will not cause addiction in that short   period after surgery. Over-the-counter lbuprophen, 600mg every 6 hours after a meal, can be substituted if desired.

Complete the prescribed antibiotic treatment for 10 days.

Never take aspirin after surgery since it thins your blood and promotes bleeding.

SEXUAL ACTIVITY

Avoid sexual intercourse for 4 weeks after surgery. Once you resume sexual relations, use condoms for 2 additional weeks to avoid damage to the healing scar.

RETURN TO WORK/FITNESS TRAINING

In situations where your job does not require heavy lifting, our patients have returned to work in as soon as 2-3 days. Otherwise, you can return to work after 5-7 days. Light weight and aerobic training can resume in 1 week.

Call your doctor for the following:

* Temperature greater than 101.5 F
* Difficulty urinating
* Uncontrollable bleeding
* Thick, yellow discharge with swelling
